The intense relationships between Robert Schumann, his wife Clara, and Johannes Brahms are brought to vivid life through music and excerpts from their passionate writings. With the arrival of the young, dynamic Brahms into their household, the Schumanns’ fragile marriage is threatened by the deepening bond between Clara and their gifted guest. “This is a beautifully put - together portrait.... Kleenex required” (The Guardian, London)

Recorded before a live audience at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, in December 2008.

Reseñas editoriales

Robert Schumann, an intensely complicated man, was a renowned German composer and his wife, Clara, was a virtuoso pianist who helped make her husband’s works famous.

Beloved Claire is part musical performance and part play that tells the story of Schumann’s turbulent marriage, using dialogue culled from the Schumanns’ letters and diaries. Things get especially interesting when a young 21-year-old admirer and composer himself, Johannes Brahms, takes up residence.

Some of Robert Schumann’s most exquisite piano compositions are performed in front of a live audience by pianist Lucy Parham, and the roles of Robert and Clara acted confidently by Martin Jarvis and Rosalind Ayres.
