The abuse had to stop. Flora was now in fear of her life. The derision and criticism of everything she said or did had reduced her to a shell of her former self. Horace was a coercive bully. She had to escape. Running away to France, she regains control of her life and mind.
Horace fuming that Flora had walked out and would no longer obey his orders–looked to pastures new. He finds Clare, a young widow, running a pub. Bowled over by Horace being a retired Judge and wanting protection falls for his smiling-gushing performance. He takes all her money. Now, she is his slave. Realizing how stupid and gullible she had been, her only recourse is to make his life hell and only one of them survives!
