No one doubts that he is and should be a Herald, but he is afraid that his mere presence is going to incite more danger right in the heart of Valdemar. The heads of the Collegia are afraid that coming back to his known haunt is going to give him less protection than if he went into hiding. Everyone decides that going elsewhere is the solution for now. So since he is going elsewhere--why not return to the place he was found in the first place and look for clues? My favorite of the collegium chronicles
Love the story, performance was good (a few cases of mispronounced words, based on established Valdemar lore), all told a great book.
The only issue I had was Mercedes' tendency to paste in segments of book 1 verbatim, in the form of flashbacks. It almost seemed to be flushing out the length without writing new material. I can't imagine reading part 5 of a series without reading parts 1 thru 4, so I don't see the point.

Too many flashbacks
I noticed many memories that seemed like chapters cut and pasted from the original books they were a part of. I was also annoyed by the repeated mis pronunciation of reticent as recitant.
