Blown away

I loved this book. I'm definitely partial to literary fiction. This was beautifully written and profound. I think the connection between these people was unusual and special.

Pretty Good!

The book overall is well written and the stories are fine. The last portion of the book seems to just kind of meander until the book just ends. Most of the vignettes are good and if you like seeing how stories fit together for a greater picture, the book does an almost great job of that. Nothing about Clyde seems to fit or matter, but maybe as the farang character that’s kind of a meta commentary. Everything else? Good to great.

Mind is Blown

You’re thrown right in, and it can be hard to get your bearings at first. If you ever do. But for every connection the reader makes, you feel more and more like you’re getting it even as everything moves from a plane we know and understand to a distant, dystopic future. Absolutely unique and incredible piece of writing.

I took another reviewer’s advice to go back and listen to the first chapter again once finished, and I can’t recommend enough.

Sweet Exercise in Nostalgia

I think this is a wonderfully conceived and wonderfully written tribute to a remarkable city, and the spirit of that city. The narrator so mangles Thai though it is a bit disruptive. I wish it was read by a Thai. But I love the city and will listen to this again, or buy the book. Nostalgia for a city not just at one time and place but across all time and place. An achievement.

Fragmented

Sad stories of the various characters. Difficult to follow the changing time line of the characters. Then the SF part felt out of place and strange.

Embarrassing Thai pronunciations

Why have a reader read stories about Thailand but this reader can not pronounce Thai words and names? I can not finish the audio because it sounds like finger nails scratching on a black board.
Did you think that people would not notice? Is Thai such an unimportant language that it doesn’t matter how you pronounce it?
Embarrassing & insulting.

atmospheric but pointless

bizarre accumulation of short stories all place in and around Bangkok with no clear message or point but conveying a gloomy portrait of the city and their inhabitant often doomed and unfulfilled lives.

Past, present and future Bangkok lives

This book consists of interwoven stories about people (and animals) who are born in, come to, or flee from Bangkok. Over time, the area changes from waterside jungle to a city of skyscrapers, and after sea levels rise, to the Venice of Asia.

Several tragedies mark the characters lives, but this isn’t a dark and brooding book. All of the characters miss someone or the place they used to know.

I recently read Swann’s Way, and I think that if Proust were a modern author, he would be writing like this. This book has similar introspection with 10 times the action, a bit of sci-fi, and a bit of the birds point of view.

Couldn't finish it.

I found it tedious and unengaging. Got about 3 hours into it. narration was good.

Maybe the worst narration ever

I understand it’s a supremely difficult book for narrators. English accents, Thai accents and names, American accents, gay, straight people, but the monotone deeply masculine American narrator misses every subtlety this book consists of.
I don’t blame the narrator but the producer for casting such an unsuitable voice for such a brilliant book
