WARNING: In this book, twelve-year-old BJ is a country boy who owns a shotgun, as do many boys raised in the country. They start out with BB guns, then 410s, and so on until their fathers deem them responsible enough to advance to a shotgun, to put meat on the table. BJ uses his gun to hunt for food, never to bag a trophy. If you are opposed to your child reading a story that contains guns, you do not want to purchase this book.

The year is 1993, and… something is circling the sky above BJ’s house.

At first, it’s just a shadow drifting across his ceiling. A slow scrape against the roof. The faintest tremor in the window glass. BJ tells himself it’s a crane. An owl. Some freak of nature blown off course.

But cranes don’t hover.

Owls don’t whisper.

And nothing natural should have a wingspan that blocks out the moon.

He finally sees it when lightning splits the sky.

Twelve feet of moth-like wings stretching wide. A face too sharp, too angular, almost human in the worst possible way, with eyes that search instead of stare. Talons curl and uncurl as if testing the air.

Waiting.

It doesn’t hunt like an animal.

It studies him.

And when it tilts its head, BJ feels it, the awful certainty that it knows his name.

This thing isn’t lost.

It isn’t random.

It’s not even curious.

It’s come for him.

And every night… it flies a little lower.
