Doloris Miller is clearing out her father's house in Joplin, Missouri, the week after his funeral, when she finds a locked box behind a false shelf in the attic. Inside it: forty-three letters, addressed to a name she has never heard, from a woman she has never heard of, going back fifty years.

The letters lead Doloris from a Missouri attic to the National Archives, and from there to the site of a displaced persons camp in Germany where her father served in the summer of 1945, and finally to a woman still living in Haifa who has waited three decades for an answer that never came.

What Doloris finds waiting at the end of the correspondence will reopen the marriage she has spent three years avoiding, and reveal the true cost of the silence her father kept: a woman who never learned that the son she was forced to give away had survived.

The Undelivered Letters continues the story begun in The Borrowed Name, moving from Albert Miller's discovery of his own hidden history to the correspondence that could have ended his mother's fifty years of not knowing, had it ever been sent.
