Captain Isaac Frye again returns to the Third New Hampshire Regiment in the Continental Army after a furlough during the Winter of 1779. He arrives to find his company’s huts in a camp called “Soldier’s Fortune”, and is thrust back into the duties of a company commander. He deals with disgruntled soldiers, the double-edged sword of military justice, and a looming mission of revenge for harms he, himself, did not receive. The years of 1779 and 1780 were undoubtedly the most trying of the Revolution for all Americans.
Every company of soldiers in the Continental Army was comprised of neighbors, friends, and extended family members. Staying true to the cause of American independence while witnessing your brothers in arms afflicted with disease, enduring exposure to extreme weather, and mustering the courage to face the perils of battle made for harrowing times. Morale suffered as attrition thinned the ranks of the Continental Army to barely half its size three years earlier. The Trials of War exposes these hardships and the personal conflicts that drove some soldiers to dishonor and many to resign and return home, leaving the cause of liberty for others to carry. Yet thousands of soldiers stayed the course, persevered, and found the strength to continue in the cause for America’s independence.
