Hidden cameras in holiday rentals and hotel rooms are becoming increasingly difficult to detect, with spy technology now embedded in everyday items like alarm clocks, USB chargers, wall sockets, and light bulbs. While recording guests without informed consent is illegal across all Australian states, security experts recommend checking accommodation by looking for unusual objects focused towards beds or bathrooms, using detection devices that identify camera lenses through reflected light, checking for warm objects that may contain powered devices, and inspecting air vents and power sockets. Former Inspector Director Anthony Macklin advises that whilst the practice remains relatively rare in major hotels, it's more common in share accommodation situations.
