Charles of Carrolton

There is a certain kind of Founder we tend to forget. Not the loud ones. Not the ones who seem born for statues and schoolhouse walls. The quieter ones. The ones who understood power not because they held it, but because they had lived without it. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was one of those men. He was the wealthiest man in the American colonies, and at the same time, a man legally shut out of political life because of his faith. He could not vote. He could not hold office. He could not practice law. And yet, when the moment came, he became one of the clearest voices for independence and one of the men who signed his name to it, fully aware of what it could cost him.
