उन्नतिकारकः जीवनमार्गः

कश्चन कृषिकः कञ्चन आश्रमं गत्वा परमया श्रद्धया गुरोः उपदेशं शृणोति स्म । उपनिषदादयः ग्रन्थाः तु तेन न अधीताः, तथापि तस्य जीवनं तु उदात्तपूर्णम् आसीत् । कदाचित् तयोः सम्भाषणावसरे कृषिकः पृच्छति 'यदि भगवान् प्रत्यक्षः भवेत् तर्हि अहं किं याचेयम्?’ इति । तदा गुरुः किं किं याचितुं शक्नोति सः इति वदति । तत् च - सम्पादनं श्रमपूर्वकं भवतु, उत्तमस्वभावः, उदारता, श्रद्धा, लज्जा, पारमार्थिकं धनं च । यस्य समीपे एतानि स्युः तेन अन्यः किमपि प्राप्तव्यं याचनीयं वा न भवेत् कस्यचित् मनुष्यस्य । तस्य जीवनं च परमोत्कृष्टं स्यात् ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

A farmer once went to an ashram and listened with deep devotion to the teacher’s guidance. Though he had not studied the Upanishads or other scriptures, his life was noble and full. During a conversation, the farmer asked: “If God were to appear before me, what should I ask for?”. The teacher replied: “Ask for these—wealth earned through hard work, good character, generosity, faith, modesty, and spiritual riches. Whoever possesses these needs nothing else, and his life will be truly excellent”.
