A Note to the Gentle Reader
from Dr. John H. Watson
There are certain disturbances of the mind which no sudden revelation will dispel. They linger, much as the London fog lingers upon the Thames—returning when one believes them gone.
It was my friend Mr. Sherlock Holmes who first impressed upon me that such troubles are not to be feared, but examined with patience and clear observation, as one might approach any perplexing case.
Yet understanding alone seldom settles the matter. The greater task lies in practice—learning when to pause, and when to observe one’s own thoughts with steadiness rather than judgment.
Within these pages I recount several further cases which reveal that the puzzles of the human heart may prove as intricate as any mystery Holmes and I have encountered.
Should you, dear reader, recognize something of your own struggles within these accounts, then perhaps you may find a measure of companionship in their telling.
The game is afoot.
