Temple Israel Synagogue Shooting in West Bloomfield

On Thursday afternoon, March 12, 2026, a violent incident occurred at a prominent synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The attack began when an individual intentionally crashed a truck into the building, which was followed by an active shooter situation. Plumes of dark smoke were observed rising from the facility shortly after the impact.
The synagogue, which is one of the largest Reform congregations in the United States, houses a preschool and nursery that were in session at the time of the event. Parents and community members expressed immediate concern for those inside, but it was later confirmed that all children and staff were safe and moved out of the complex.
On-site security personnel immediately confronted and engaged the suspect in gunfire. Following the exchange, law enforcement confirmed that the suspect was killed at the scene. Despite the severity of the attack and the presence of numerous emergency vehicles and ambulances, no injuries or fatalities were reported among the congregation, staff, or first responders.
In response to the emergency, local authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents and implemented lockdowns for schools in the vicinity. Federal investigators, including the FBI, arrived to assist local and state police, and the incident is being treated as an act of terrorism and a vehicle-ramming attack. A state bomb squad was also dispatched to the scene as a precautionary measure.
Government officials have condemned the attack, stating that antisemitism and violence have no place in the community and expressing relief that there were no casualties among the innocent. To ensure continued safety, state police increased patrols at other places of worship throughout the region.
