In response to the immediate threat, the university issued urgent alerts instructing the community to follow established safety protocols, which include moving away from the danger or barricading oneself in a secure area. Police from both the university and the city responded immediately to the scene to secure the area and provide assistance. By approximately 11:43 a.m., officials confirmed that the threat had ended and there was no longer an active danger to the campus community.
As a result of the tragedy, the university canceled all classes and suspended operations on the main campus for the remainder of the day. Authorities requested that students and staff avoid the area surrounding the academic building while the investigation continued. To assist those affected, a Family Information Center was opened in a nearby arena to provide updates and resources to families. Additionally, the school provided counseling services and peer support to individuals grappling with the impact of the event.
This incident followed another separate shooting that occurred late the previous Wednesday night near a campus dining hall and parking lot. In that earlier event, two individuals who were not university students lost their lives. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigations into these events to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
The university maintains a comprehensive crisis and emergency management plan designed to coordinate responses to various threats. This plan includes a multi-tiered alert system that utilizes sirens, text messages, and desktop notifications to communicate hazards as rapidly as possible. Security on the campus is overseen by a certified police department that operates 24 hours a day, providing patrols and safety programs. To further enhance security, academic buildings are access-controlled, and community members are encouraged to utilize a personal safety mobile application for reporting suspicious activity.
