At the heart of the Christian faith are two inseparable truths: love and forgiveness. Jesus does not simply ask us to love those who love us. He calls us to forgive those who hurt us, even our enemies. Yet forgiveness is often difficult because we lack true awareness of our own sins and the mercy God has shown us. When we recognise how deeply we ourselves have been forgiven, our hearts begin to soften toward others who struggle and fail just as we do. Self-awareness leads to humility, and humility opens the door to empathy. As we meditate on Christ’s Passion and the boundless mercy He has shown us, we learn that forgiveness is not merely a decision of the mind but a grace that flows from a transformed heart. And in doing so, free ourselves from the prison of resentment and anger.
Reflection Question: How might a deeper awareness of God’s mercy towards my own sins help me forgive someone who has hurt me from the heart?
