We Get There in Stages

“…the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the LORD commanded.” — Exodus 17:1

We would all like to get there yesterday.

To be healed —

within and among us.

To be wiser —

as a people.

To be stronger —

not alone, but together.

To be finished with the struggle.

But growth rarely happens all at once.

It happens in increments.

In stages.

In stretches of movement

and stretches where we wonder if anything is happening at all.

Sometimes it happens when we realize we’ve been headed the wrong direction —

and have the humility to turn around.

The people in the wilderness did not arrive in a single leap.

They journeyed by stages.

So do we.

We arrive by allowing ourselves to be led —

sometimes by the testimonies of those who have walked ahead of us,

sometimes by mentors and friends,

sometimes by the wisdom of our community,

and sometimes by the still, steady voice within.

We learn.

We grow.

We adjust.

We begin again.

And above all else —

we do not quit.
