When We Can’t Get Enough
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…” — Matthew 6:19
The verb tense here means:
Don’t keep storing.
Don’t keep accumulating.
As in —
Don’t keep chasing and piling up:
Money.
Power.
Status.
Recognition.
We tell ourselves:
When we get enough, we will be safe.
When we have enough, we will be secure.
When we achieve enough, we will be happy.
But the more we accumulate,
the emptier we feel.
These treasures don’t just rot.
They rot us from the inside out.
To experience the Kingdom of Heaven among us,
we store up a completely different kind of treasure:
Kindness.
Compassion.
Generosity.
Service.
This treasure cannot be lost.
It cannot be stolen.
It does not decay.
It does not leave us empty.
And as we keep storing this kind of treasure,
we discover a wellbeing the world cannot give
and cannot take away —
Wellbeing rooted in love.
