India and the United States of America recently, in a joint statement, announced a long-pending trade deal under which the US will export select agricultural products to India while Indian exports to the US will attract an 18% tariff, down from 25%. Tariffs on US exports to India, as announced by the White House, will be reduced to zero. The White House also stated that it would “monitor whether India resumes, directly or indirectly, importing oil from the Russian Federation” and that, if India fails to stop such imports, the US would “reimpose an additional ad valorem duty of 25 percent on Indian imports.” In this episode of Editorial, HW News Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair discusses whether India has compromised its sovereignty in its dealings with the United States. He also examines how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi dealt with the US and then-President Lyndon B. Johnson when he halted PL-480 wheat exports to India, and how an Alabama newspaper, during Indira Gandhi’s visit to the US, carried the headline, “New Indian Leader Comes Begging.” Learn more about your ad choices.
