H2-Seg2-TCJS- Tues1/13/26- Interview with Sc Rep Sarita Edgerton about Bill 3310 00:00 All right, let's go to the WRD talk line. We've got Mark in Pickens. I want to go to him. He's got a response to Drew McKissick. If I can push that button. There you go, Mark. Welcome. Hello, Charlie. Hello, Mark. Can you hear me? I can. Yes, sir. What's on your mind? OK, I'm sorry. I want to ask you a question. Now, if you were a, let's say a seasoned lawyer that run for office, which most of the politicians in Colombia are. Yeah. 00:29 Would you say that you weren't aware when he said that maybe they didn't know that these primaries were causing the things that they're causing? They know. How in the world? They know. Exactly. know. Anybody that's been there for any length of time, they know. They know about that. Exactly right. So yeah. to say that, and he's the head of GOP in South Carolina or the bring home of the GOP? 00:56 You would have to have just fallen off the turnip truck and landed in the South Carolina State Legislature to not know that closing the primaries would be beneficial. You're exactly right about that, Mark. Let's go to Serita, Representative Serita Edgerton. Serita, welcome to the program. So Drew was talking about House Bill 3643, but there's another bill out there that might be a little stronger. Yes, sir. 3643, while it does move the ball to the next 01:26 first down line to use a football analogy. This one actually kicks it into throws it into the end zone for a touchdown. Um, so I call it a jar primaries 36 43. It just keeps the door open a little bit. Um, but 33 10 actually closes the primaries, um, and, and keep make sure that the independence just can't go and you can register as an independent and vote wherever you want to. 01:55 It really nails down what you have to do as an independent if you want to vote in a primary. Now that's going to get a lot of pushback from the ACLU, but that's going to happen anyway, so we don't need to worry about that. How does 3310 actually address the quote unquote unaffiliated voter? 02:15 Well, I have to get that for sure. I think they have to register. If they're independent, they can't vote in either of the Republican or Democrat primary. They can vote in the November election, but they cannot vote in a primary. OK, now the way I think the bill reads is you can vote if you're an independent, you can vote in the Democrat primary if the Democrat primary allows independent voters to vote in it. That's correct. I believe that's right. Yeah. Or if the Republican primary 02:45 If the Republican Party decided to allow independent voters to vote in that primary, they would also be able to do that. So it does close it up just a little bit. And like Drew was telling us, I'm sorry, go ahead. No, no, go ahead. Drew was telling us what? That, and you mentioned this as well in a text, that this hearing has actually been moved. Any idea why? The reason given from the House floor by Chairman Jordan was that they had received such 03:14 feedback on it that they needed to go back and relook at some of the bills that were in there and take a little bit more time to think about them. So your calls are working people your calls are where I was about to say I'm going to take that as a good thing. do and another thing that has 3643 which is a little concerning is the 2 out of 3 voting in 2 out 3 South Carolina primary right. That could cut off. 03:43 people in the military who moved to our state and have voted in a Republican primary elsewhere. ah they wanted to run for office and they're an upstanding citizen, but they've only voted in one out of, only voted in the last one. So ah maybe, you know, that would cut some of those veterans out from running for office until they have to be in the state for so many years to vote in uh so many primaries in a row. 04:12 Yeah, I heard and I don't know who filed it. It was just kind of in passing that somebody was looking at a bill ...
