Most people think the danger with an IRS letter is saying the wrong thing. That’s not the real danger. The real danger is responding before you understand what the letter actually is. IRS letters don’t start with proof. They start with assumptions—about authority, obligation, and compliance. Most people don’t see that. They think the letter is proof. So they explain. They deny. They react emotionally. And without realizing it, they fix the IRS’s missing foundation. That’s called curing the defect. Emotion becomes part of the record. Records don’t preserve truth—they document participation. Silence preserves leverage. Questions force explanation. And whoever has to explain is losing control. That’s presumption. And tomorrow, we’ll talk about proper order.
