Why the US is taking control of Venezuela

Venezuela, home to the world's largest proven oil reserves with 303 billion barrels, has become the target of US intervention despite Donald Trump's commitment to end foreign conflicts. The Trump administration began conducting airstrikes on drug-trafficking boats in September, killing over 110 people, while citing the fentanyl crisis as justification. American oil companies are now set to take over Venezuela's state-run oil operations in a country where 90 per cent of the population lives in poverty, with the US also gaining access to natural gas, iron ore, gold and diamond deposits.
