Can You Only Buy Off Your Kid's Christmas List?

We had a listener call this morning with a very interesting Christmas dilemma. Her kids gave her a list of what they wanted for Christmas, but she found something that she really wants to get her. Is she obligated to get presents only off the list or can she go rogue?
