אף שהמסקנא היא שחנוכה הוא רק "להלל ולהודאה" ולא "לשמחה", אבל מכיון שלדעת הרמב"ם צ"ל גם בחנוכה ענין של שמחה, הרי ראוי ונכון לנהוג כן עכ"פ פעם א' במשך ימי החנוכה – לא בתור חיוב אלא בתור מנהג, ובפרט שלא ראו כן אצל רבותינו נשיאינו (והרי שמחה אמיתית היא רק כשמצרפים גם אחרים, ואם עשו זאת הי' זה מתפרסם). מכיון שלאחרונה ניתוסף בענין החושך – אע"פ שצריך לדעת גם "מעלות עצמו", שכבר פעלו גדולות ונצורות בהפצת היהדות והמעיינות חוצה, והגיעו גם למקומות כאלו שלא שערו כלל, והולך ומתפשט וכו', אבל עדיין לא הגיעו לכל יהודי ולכל מקום, ואלו הם ה"פכים קטנים" שמעכב עדיין ה"קץ שם לחושך" – צ"ל הענין ד"וה' יגי' חשכי". ולכן, כדי לפרוץ גם נקודות החושך האחרונות, ה"ז דבר נכון ונדרש להוסיף בענין השמחה, שזהו חידוש גם לגבי השמחה של הקפות בשמע"צ ושמח"ת, ובמילא שמחה גדולה יותר, עד שע"י שמחה זו נרקוד לקראת משיח צדקנו, ובקרוב ממש!

Synopsis

Although the halachic conclusion is that Chanukah is a time of “praise and thanksgiving” and not “rejoicing,” nevertheless, since according to the Rambam it is also a time of joy, it is fitting and appropriate to conduct a joyous celebration at least once during Chanukah, not as an obligation, but as a custom. Though it is true that one must recognize his own virtues, and it is true that great and wondrous things have already been achieved in spreading Yiddishkeit and the wellsprings of Chassidus outward, reaching places never imagined etc. – still, not every Jew and every place has yet been reached; there remain the “small jugs” that delay the “end to darkness.” Since lately there has been an increase in darkness, and we need “Hashem to illuminate the darkness,” therefore, to break through even the final spots of darkness, it is proper and necessary to increase in joy. Since this celebration is a novelty even compared to the joy of the hakafos on Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, it is therefore an even greater joy, and with it we will dance to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu, may it happen very soon.
