A massacre in a church. A country on the brink of civil war. And the biggest gold heist in living memory.

Ben Gabriel was once a soldier in the elite British Special Forces, but that was before his dishonourable discharge and his subsequent descent into a life of crime.

Now Gabriel might just be the only person who can discover the truth behind the horrific church massacre that has devastated an Afrikaans farming community. The message that this is “only the beginning” sparks the fear of genocide.

Were the killings an act of ‘white genocide’? Or was this murder?

Gabriel needs to discover the truth before the country erupts into civil war. But one of the country’s most powerful men is convinced that Gabriel was behind the biggest gold heist in living memory and is determined to hunt him down.

Can Gabriel do it? Can he evade the wealthy and save the country?

Murderous is the second book in the Gabriel series of thrillers set in the turbulent political landscape of South Africa. If you like the works of John le Carre, Len Deighton and Lee Child, stories of the underdog who questions authority, and the daring capers of those who break the law to find the truth, then you’ll love this breathtakingly fresh thriller from David Hickson. Discover a new world of intriguing action today!

“Murderous” is that rare bird, scarce in Africa as well as elsewhere, that is to say, it is a sequel that is better than the first in the series – and the first was very well done.

Praise for the Gabriel series

There’s so much to enjoy here. The rich landscape of South Africa is presented in such a way as to make you want to pack your bags and dash to the airport. The characters are beautifully drawn; embittered old warriors and statesmen, cradling secrets and yearning for one more day in the sun. The quality of the writing shines through on every page. A book to savour.

The author has a way of using words to evoke emotion, suspense, and paint a picture that makes the book come to life in a vivid way. I ‘fell for’ Gabriel, the flawed hero, who's drawn into a tangled web of intrigue and governmental cover ups in an African nation. An all-around satisfying read!

South Africa can’t be easily labelled. It’s an extraordinarily complex country with a history replete with blood and hope. Crime fiction novels are at their very best when they incorporate real life events and make their characters a living breathing part of that history. That’s what you have here and plenty more besides.

Captivating from the very beginning! It was great to see it set in a different venue than other thrillers, South Africa. I found the story fast paced, enjoyable, and found myself reading late into the night. Highly recommend.

One of the best books I have read for a long time. David Hickson has a unique way with words that brings out vivid pictures of the world around us.

A phenomenal and exciting debut from David Hickson. Deon Meyer and Lee Child are two of my favourite writers, David Hickson has just joined that duo … Great characters, great story, great setting.

Loved the depth of characters and the pace of the book! A must read for thriller fans!! This is up there with Robert Dugoni and Daniel Silva.

Thriller readers the world over know London, Berlin, Paris, and Washington DC, but few are aware of the complicated web of political and financial intrigue that exists at the bottom of Africa. Hickson provides wonderful characters with hazy backgrounds involved in all the mystery that is the country of South Africa.

Ben Gabriel is my favourite kind of hero – a little bit maverick, someone who doesn’t quite follow the rules but even so, is deeply moral.

I do love Gabriel. He’s a little dark and devious, but overall his heart is in the right place. Or maybe not entirely.
