Just known as 'football' in the US and Canada..it's been around since the late 1800s. The first official football game in the US was played between Rutgers and Princeton. Football was inspired by rugby, the original ball was round and the rules stated that it could not be picked up or carried and there were 25 players on the team at the time. The game has evolved with an elongated ball and 11 players on the field per team. College football took off well before the pro version...but the 1958 NFL Championship Game, known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played," changed everything. Today there are 32 NFL teams split evenly between the NFC and the AFC.
