Frank Stedman is an ex-athlete who retired due to injury, but his critics feel his lackluster NFL career should have concluded sooner. Having failed at everything since leaving football, he goes back to Pearl, Texas, because he has no place else to go. Debby Newsome has worked for every media outlet her father owns. When Frank arrives in Pearl, she is hiding out at Daddy’s retirement ranch, determined to do something on her own. Over a hunter’s weekend, it falls to a disheartened middle-aged football player, a self-possessed scribbler and a boot-tough old black cowboy to destroy Pearl’s destroyer once and for all.
