Schlaffer Wins the Bout as Cubs Outpunch Kernels 4–1
This afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium felt more like a title fight than a baseball game, as South Bend’s Tyler Schlaffer and Cedar Rapids’ Chase Cheney squared off in a heavyweight pitching duel.
Schlaffer came out swinging—delivering haymakers from the mound with 10 strikeouts over 7 innings, allowing just one hit on 100 pitches. A true prizefight performance. Cheney went the distance for the Kernels, tossing 6 1/3 innings and giving up only 4 hits and 2 earned runs, but took the tough-luck loss.
The Cubs broke the scoreless tie in the 7th when Ivan Brethowr landed a clean jab—a line-drive single to right—scoring Cameron Sisneros. Miguel Pabon advanced to third and then crossed home plate on a Brian Kalmer sac fly.
In the 8th, South Bend kept landing punches. Jefferson Rojas scored on a Sisneros sacrifice fly, and Cristian Hernández stole third—his 28th bag of the year—then scored on a wild throw by catcher Luke Napleton. That made it 4–0 before the Kernels answered with a late-round run in the 9th.
South Bend wins the bout by unanimous decision, 4–1.
Next game tomorrow night—first bell rings at 7:15 p.m. with pregame on Sports Radio
