A riveting thriller of corporate intrigue and cutthroat competition between American and Japanese business interests.

On the forty-fifth floor of the Nakamoto tower in downtown Los Angeles - the new American headquarters of the immense Japanese conglomerate - a grand opening celebration is in full swing.

On the forty-sixth floor, in an empty conference room, the corpse of a beautiful young woman is discovered.

The investigation immediately becomes a headlong chase through a twisting maze of industrial intrigue, a no-holds-barred conflict in which control of a vital American technology is the fiercely coveted prize - and in which the Japanese saying "business is war" takes on a terrifying reality.

Rising Sun was made into a film, starring Sean Connery.

If this book was three hours shorter, it would have been exceptional. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the murder was fascinating and well done.
However, the book gets mired down with extended lectures about the economic relationship between Japan and America. Crichton’s paranoid fear of an economic collapse of America creates an unrealistic narrative where every character—police, politicians, and journalists—is obsessed with the topic.
Some have called the book racist. Certainly, the book is a heavy handed warning against the differences in business tactics between nations. However, I felt there were relatively few times when a negatively prejudicial view was present. Instead, the book presents what appears to be a well-researched representation of cultural differences between nations and how those differences play out economically.
Ultimately, the book seems to recognize its shortcomings: by the end, even the main character condemns the ‘endless lecture’ on the economics of Japanese. Though a fascinating story, the unending discussion of the topic keeps the book from reaching its potential.

Heavy Handed

If you could sum up Rising Sun in three words, what would they be?

Educational, entertaining, beware. America watch out for the sleeping dragon

What did you like best about this story?

Author wove great Japanese facts into a good mystery. Note: I did use the new 1.25x speed to match the author intended mystery.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

I am a big fan of MA aka Todd Haberkorn reads. He owns the newest 2 Robert Crais reads. He Does does an excellent job on this read which has a lot of Japanese paragraphs. I love his little girl interpretation!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Reader did a better job than the film of Sean Connery and Wesely Snipes.

Better than the Film

What did you like best about Rising Sun? What did you like least?

Interesting plot line, but it seemed that at every turn there was a long speech bashing the Japanese and their trade policies. It was difficult to focus on the story because everything lead back to how "bad Japan is."

If you’ve listened to books by Michael Crichton before, how does this one compare?

Not as entertaining as his other books.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

Too Much Japan Bashing
