600 km on cycle! Over some of the bumpiest Indian roads you can imagine!
My poor butt will never be the same again!
‘INFIRM OF PURPOSE’ my wife screams at me ‘ARE YOU A MAN OR A MOUSE? START PEDALLING!’
I had done quite a bit of cycling in and around Mumbai - but SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED is a crazy person - on a totally different level!
She has cycled ridiculous distances on a dare… 800 km on the wild Pamir highway from Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan over the Pamir mountains, 900 km on the Srinagar - Leh - Manali road over the Himalayas, 600 km from Goa to Kerala over the Sahyadri mountains, etc…
And now she wants to cycle from MUMBAI to GOA - down the scenic Konkan coast! And she graciously offers me an opportunity to ride with her - a one-time-only offer! Be a Man - if you can!
I gulp nervously … will I survive such a ride? Or will I end up as a whimpering heap of wreckage by the side of the road?
But then I get a brilliant idea! I will get an ELECTRIC cycle!
WOOHOO!
Then I can push pedals as long as I want...and then just twist the throttle when I am tired!
How crafty is that? I am so smart!
But that #$#% electric cycle causes more problems than it solves! It tries its best to kill me! Oh no!
Read about a wonderful and super-fun cycle ride over the mountains and beaches of the historic Konkan coast on the western edge of India - full of ancient forts and temples, ancient immigrants from across the seas, the birthplace of the Maratha empire - Independent India’s last indigenous empire, and so much more.
A unique exploration of India - by Indians!
Get a real taste of India, with crisp and flavoursome sides of history, culture, traditions - and a lot of fun anecdotes and stories.
Reviews
A very refreshing read. I have always enjoyed Ketan and Bharathi's conversations, errrrrr arguments, errrrrrrr Bharathi's frowning; whatever it is. But, trust me, till now whatever I have read about Bharathi, she is a person to idolise. She is adventurous and bold to the core. I have immensely enjoyed their Everest Base Camp trek. This time both of them have gone cycling from Mumbai to Goa. But there is much more than the adventures and misadventures of this cycling trip. There are titbits about Bharathi's previous 'gallantry' cycle expeditions. There are some comic accounts of Ketan's few funny cycle trips. And there's the history behind some places from where they pass on their cycles. This book is informative as well as hilarious. Thank you Ketan for a dose of motivation.
An epic read - Hats off to KJo for this funny read full of mishaps and awkward outbursts from SWMBO. Immensely interesting and even a good read for history fans. I would surely recommend this book for travel enthusiasts interested in Maharashtra and also for having a bit of a laugh!
It's very amusing - especially on the descriptions of his trusty steed which had me scurrying to google it given his glowing descriptions of floating on the road before the hair-raising conclusion.
Awesome Read Makes me wanna to the Mumbai To Goa Route - A lovely and inspiring book from Ketan.
I have now "travelled" with the author via motorcycles, bus, backpack and now by bicycle through India on his various adventures with his amigos, fiance and now wife. Each book has been a delightful travelogue through India and this book is just as enjoyable.
