North-East India! Where India meets Asia!
A solo ride through the meeting place of empires, cultures, traditions and people!
Ancient kingdoms, tribal cultures, tantric temples, giant rivers, rolling hills, majestic forests, Tigers, Hornbills, One-horned rhinos … and even a unique citrus fruit!
Site of the greatest battle of World War II - but forgotten! The Battle of Imphal and the Battle of Kohima - which prevented the Japanese imperial army from entering British India.
The poignant story of Subhash Chandra Bose and the ‘traitor’ Indian National Army… the British Raj’s nightmare!
I ride alone through the wonders of India’s colourful and vibrant North-Eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland.
‘Is it safe?’ everyone asks ‘Won’t someone shoot you, or kidnap you, or eat you?’
‘Well…’ I shrug ‘You never know until you go there and see.’
‘Why are you going alone? Why not wait until you can find someone to go with you?’
‘If you have to wait for someone to travel with you, you may end up waiting a lifetime! If no one walks with you - then walk alone!’
A unique exploration of India - by an Indian!
Get a real taste of India, with crisp and flavoursome sides of history, culture, traditions - and a lot of fun anecdotes and stories.
Reviews
The author adds another entertaining tale of motorcycle travel in North East India. This book like the rest of his series is much more than just a motorcycle travel story. His descriptions include much historic info plus the natural history of the areas he visits. As you might imagine, no travel story is complete without some humorous misadventures and the author is very creative in finding ways out of his dilemmas. Highly recommended!
Humorous and almost conversational style of writing makes for a breezy and entertaining read. At times I was reminded of Wodehouse. Though not a guidebook, it still gives some flavour on what a potential traveller to the region can expect. An unexpected bonus was the interesting insights into the history of the region, and how it was shaped by various global and national events.
A great book - one of Ketan's best! Really enjoyed the book! Much as the Amigos are a fun group, I'm really begin to enjoy these solo traveling books. Much more ruminative and thoughtful.
There is a change of scene this time which I liked. North East, not a very popular destination and I wasn't aware of it's geography and history. Kamakhya temple, root bridges, Bangla Desh border, polo matches. And above all the history of Imphal battle, the role of INA and Netaji. A delightful commentary on religions in general. As a regular reader of KJo I expected to meet interesting people and I wasn't disappointed. A good read, especially in these days when you are mostly locked in. Highly recommended!!!
