Did you ever dream of going around the world? How would you accomplish that? How would it all come together? How would you know what was required regarding VISAs and immunizations? Would you grow tired of the same old hum-drum at sea and become bored? To answer these and many other questions regarding a journey of such magnitude, one might strongly consider taking a Global Study Abroad Program sponsored by the University of Virginia. The entire agenda is coordinated by the University. It is geared toward shipboard studies on “sea days” and shore excursions at the fourteen ports of call, with reports of interactions and lessons gained while ashore. This voyage was 111 days, with 450 college students; 42 professors drawn from across the globe, many who brought their families, and 70 life-long learners. This writing is my diary, coupled with a mix of writings and poems I “made up” as the moment or situation suggested. I hope you find my story humorous, witty, serious, begging empathy and maybe even some tugging on your heart strings. It is OK to show your emotions – I hope you do. This voyage is meant to open our minds as we join; it helps us find an educational link to exploration of the new cultures and experiences of the people we visit; helps us attain personal growth as we become global citizens; shows that each of us has a chance of a new life. We are privileged to be on this MV Explorer ship circumnavigating east from Montreal to visit 14 ports and arrive back at Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I believe education is a gift lasting a lifetime.
