Formula One has always been a dangerous sport.

But there was a time when pit crew, marshals and even spectators took a chance every time they went to the track in an era when safety was just an afterthought. It was the drivers, though, who took the greatest risk. Manufacturers, designers, and team owners encouraged them to push themselves and their cars to the limit and beyond in the quest for more speed.

Many were let down by the machinery, race officials, the safety features meant to protect them, or the medical treatment they subsequently received, if at all.

Did you know?
  • In the early days of Formula One, many drivers did not wear seat belts because they preferred to be thrown clear in case of an accident.
  • One driver was involved in a Hollywood movie that depicted a crash on the same track and spot where he was to die a year later.
  • A fortune teller told the girlfriend and mother of one driver that he would become famous but die before the age of 30. She was right!
You can expect all such information in this book, but it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Some F1 drivers suffered horrific accidents, dying by the side of the track whilst the race carried on around them. While some of those who died, like Ayrton Senna and Gilles Villeneuve, are still remembered today as legends of the sport, others have been relegated to footnotes in F1 history.

What they have in common is that they all died before their time, and all deserved to be remembered.

This is their story.

This Formula 1 book will be a perfect gift for F1 fans.
