Beginning in 1955 in Lewes on the Delaware Bay, Disconnected and Drifting is a novel duo prelude to The Willow Chronicle.
In Part 1, Carl Meyers, a former Marine and the Lewes Police Chief, is living a life disconnected from significant others and must deal with the horrific murders of two boys, but Part 1 is less about “who done it” than it is about exploring life in a town affected by fallout from World War II and from the Civil War, a town where the racist beliefs of the Confederacy endure in the practice of segregation.
In Part 2, Meyers, disillusioned with police work and driven by profound loneliness, heads west in search of his wife, who left him in 1939 and was reported to be living on the Olympic Peninsula. During the trek west, Meyers connects with Reginald Rhodes, one of the first African American Marine Recruits in WW II. Rhodes joins Meyers on the trek west, and in Port Townsend, Meyers encounters another murder, begins to put down roots, and discovers he has a daughter named Willow Benton, which sets the stage for volume 2 of The Willow Chronicle: Whirlwinds, Waves, and Willow.
