Therapy with Scapegoat Survivors of Narcissistic Parents explains how and why children are assigned the scapegoat role in narcissistic families. Adult scapegoat survivors are left with painful beliefs that they are defective and deserve less than others. These clients come to therapy with the hope of freeing themselves from these beliefs. This book shows how Control-Mastery Theory can help them do this.
Jay Reid shows clinicians how to incorporate Control-Mastery Theory in their work with scapegoat survivors. You will learn to structure treatment and build therapeutic relationships that support these clients’ efforts to disprove the painful beliefs that underly their suffering today.
"Jay Reid is a leading expert in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse. His newest book, Therapy with Scapegoat Survivors of Narcissistic Abuse, is a tour de force. It is filled with rich clinical insights, useful psychological theory, and numerous case examples. I cannot recommend this book highly enough both to therapists and lay readers."
—George Silberschatz, Ph.D.
Clinical Professor, UCSF Dept of Psychiatry
Past President, International Society for Psychotherapy Research
"Jay Reid offers a thoughtful and clinically grounded approach to working with scapegoat survivors of narcissistic abuse. His use of Control-Mastery Theory brings clarity and structure to complex clinical territory, and his deep empathy and nuanced understanding of these clients is evident throughout. This book is a valuable resource for any therapist engaged in this work.”
