A lock has an impossible job: admit one person, exclude everyone else, through the same opening — while having no eyes, no ears, and no capacity to perceive anything about the person standing in front of it.
So every lock in history has cheated. It checks something you have, or something you know, or something you are — and then infers a person from the proxy. That inference has never once been correct. It is where every failure in four thousand years has lived, and it is exactly as wide today as it was in an Assyrian palace in 700 BCE.
The Architecture of Trust follows that gap from wooden pins falling by gravity to keys that have no physical existence at all:
- 1784. Joseph Bramah puts his lock in a Piccadilly window with two hundred guineas beside it and invites all London to try — staking real money on a principle cryptographers would not formalize for another ninety-nine years.
- 1851. An American salesman arrives at the Great Exhibition and opens both of Britain's flagship locks in a single summer. The argument that follows — was he exposing a danger or creating one? — is the first modern debate about disclosure, and it has never been settled.
- The 1870s. Bank engineers realize the weakest component in a vault is a frightened man with a family, and build a safe that he cannot open either. The most elegant idea in the history of physical security works by removing someone's ability to comply.
- 2003. A cryptographer publishes a method for deriving a building's master key from a single ordinary key, and is met with the identical accusations levelled in 1851 — in nearly identical words, one hundred and fifty-two years later.
But this is not a book about mechanisms. It is a book about the decisions mechanisms enforce.
Why a thousand years of European lockmaking produced magnificent objects that were trivially easy to open. Why decent security was a luxury good until 1861, and what changed when it stopped being one. Why the systems that authenticate us also observe us, as an inherent property of how they work. Why a compromised fingerprint can never be reissued. And why the largest breaches of the modern era involve no broken cryptography at all — only people who were trusted, and shouldn't have been.

Along the way it does something unusual: when a famous "fact" turns out to rest on repetition rather than evidence, this book says so, shows the reader how to tell the difference, and applies the same standard to its own claims.
