Acerca de esta escucha

The long-awaited, enormously entertaining memoir by one of the great artists of our time.

In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire 60-year-long and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Hannah and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances, and his famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.

This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

To the Heart

Perhaps the best audiobook experience I’ve ever had. It’s a smart, honest, generous book from an honest, frustrated but hugely kind and brilliant artist - delivered like a late night phone call from your smartest and most beloved friend. It’s less that you talk for hours - more that you just listen- hoping the call will never end. I loved every minute. Allen surely addresses the issues of his accusations - and does so with both clarity and legitimate bewilderment. But it is only a part of the story he builds. For all his humility, I am, and have always been, on the side of his art. He is our Chekhov. Understanding the intent and positions of great artists and creators is the wonderful bonus of living in a culture vibrantly aware of its own art. To be so moved and so delighted in the process was a lovely bonus. It’s a great book I urge folks to listen to rather than to read. Allen’s abundant honesty and sweetness is something I suspect moves straight from the ear to the heart.

Truly amazing and important book, especially now.

A truly wonderful story. One of the best books I've ever read (or listened to). With every Wood Allen work, it's not only what happens in the story, but how Woody tells it. I found myself laughing out loud... and very moved throughout. Even though he would hate hearing it, Woody Allen is an American treasure. For society to have turned his back on such a truly genius artist, is incredibly sad. Especially for future generations to come who won't be exposed to his work as I was. As many of us were. His talent is so, that if he never made a movie but just wrote this one book-- his style and prose in this one single autobiography would be enough to call him brilliant. He just is.

This book is also incredibly important now. Woody Allen was one of the first victims of cancel culture. And as I write this in 2020 and our world is spinning out of control, freedom of speech is going out the window, art is being banned, our past is being erased... it is important to look into the facts. Get informed. it is important to remember that one of the main principles of our society is: Innocent until proven guilty. While I was very happy to hear Woody's words so beautifully performed on Amazon Audible... and I thank Amazon for that, I wish Amazon would also have the courage and do the right thing in releasing Woody Allen's movies. I can't believe as of now I will have to fly to another country to watch "A Rainy Day in New York" because Amazon is afraid to do the right thing.

Anyway, beautiful book about film, love, life, baseball, and all the other daily stuff of our short time here on earth.

Wonderful, sad, telling.

I was already a huge Allen fan before listening to this book. My favorite of his movies are all ones that he stars in. I relate to him on some level. I have the same affection for New York City. I was also born in Brooklyn and my younger years were spent around NYC. I share the romanticism of some of the images of NYC in his films. I find his writing to be funny, insightful, intelligent and easy to digest. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration. Mr. Allen’s recounting of the sexual abuse allegations made by Mia Farrow and Dylan is truly sad and tragic for all involved. I don’t see how any thoughtful, reasonably minded person, whom actually takes the time and makes the effort to examine all of the facts, could believe he sexually abused his daughter. My opinion on that matter aside, again, a tragedy for all involved. I have listened to this audiobook twice and will listen a third time and possibly more. I enjoy Allen’s company and, I greatly enjoyed this audiobook. Health, happiness and strength to all.

Funny, frank and all over the place.

If you are a fan I Woody Allen, this autobiography will tick most of the boxes. There are thousands of funny one liners, great stories, and - of course - plenty of dissection of the nastiness surrounding Mia Farrow’s jihad against our bespectacled protagonist. I wish there was more about the process of filmmaking, but nobody’s perfect. Excellent overall.

Excellent Biography

I've enjoyed most of Allen's movies. He's had a very interesting life and career. The book is funny, interesting and, since he narrates, a great listen.

Wonderful Memoir

I really loved this autobiography by a great filmmaker. He was as thorough and thoughtful and self-deprecating as I would expect. I believed his sincerity about the false accusations against him, and will always remain a fan of his humor and follow his accomplishments with great interest. I would have liked to hear more about his Brooklyn family through the years, but was really touched by his descriptions and anecdotes surrounding his wives and lovers. I was also touched by his honest assessment of his relationship with Farrow despite her vindictive behavior towards him later. His son Ronan is a huge disappointment, but he still spoke of him with love. His stories about Louise Lasser were especially poignant. I really felt a strong desire to meet and know her personally as I too suffer from mental illness. Though he discussed her a lot, I longed to know more about his successful relationship with Soon Yi. She just seems to be such a treasure. What an incredible life.

Liberals eat one of their own

Why is Woody Allen surprised that the New York Times attacked him and that Hillary Clinton returned his campaign contribution? Liberal media are master purveyors of the false narrative.

Best audible book ever!

This audible is the most interesting and entertaining audible book i have have discovered. Not only the content but the reading by the author add to the overall experience. Allen goes through his personal life, back stories behind all his movies and the facts behind the accusations made by Mia Farrow and their daughter, Dillon. I throughly enjoyed this audible recording more than any of the other 150 plus recorded books in my collection. I highly recommend it to anyone interested even remotely interested in the author, his films, or the accusations flying around.

Worth a listen

As quirky as one would expect. Woody Allen is an American treasure, and if you used to think so but have your doubts now, you owe it to yourself to give this a listen.
