These Maxims are offered to the Public as original. They are the spontaneous effusions of private observation, made at different periods, on the human character. The Author is unconscious of any plagiarism, not having consulted, either by reading or recollection, any other writer on the same subject. 1. Few people like to receive ad« vice after they leave school, much better than they would to have the old birch rod shaken over their heads. 2. Advice has fallen into disrepute, from the mediocrity of those who give it. Our amour propre is insulted by receiving monition from persons whom we know to be our inferiors in wisdom and morality, and our superiors only on the one little paltry point in which they chance to be able to lord it over us. 3. Advice is irresistible from the lips of sages or saints.
