Bay Winchester is having a tough week.

As the local editor of Hemlock Cove's only newspaper, she just happens to be present when a body is found in an area corn maze. To make matters worse, the police believe the murder may have something to do with the occult.

This was a fun, quick, and enjoyable story

This book is the first in the series Wicked Witches of the Midwest, by Amanda M. Lee, Published December 12th 2012 by Winchester Shaw Publications. Narrated by Aris.

The genre of this book is paranormal, modern detective, fantasy and magic. Which are all my favorites.

This is a story of the Winchester family, a family of witches that consists of an old aunt (don’t let that fool you, she is quit handful), three middle aged sisters, each one has a daughter (three cousins). Bay Winchester is working as the local editor of Hemlock Cove’s only newspaper, while her two cousins Clove and Thistle work in a shop. A murder happens in the town, and Bay feels she can be in benefit in more than one way, with the help of her family, the town’s sheriff, and a biker, she will solve this case.

This was a fun, quick, and enjoyable story, once I started it was hard to leave it (I ended up listening to it in one day). I do, however, have to admit the setting had some big holes in it that left me wondering. The whole town knows that there is a family of witches, and all they do is gaze uncomfortably at them?? Or what kind of sheriff asks the local witch to accompany him to the crime scene?? Yet I felt that the characters were real and believable enough, they were likable. I mean it’s a family of seven women, their bickering and fighting made sense to me (as I’m living in four women family so I know). Although they weren’t as deep as I would have liked. The events were told by the narrative rather than shown, and while the story was fast paced and fun, the characters were kind of predictable and (there wasn’t a lot of events there to start with), interesting, but somehow kind of dull.

The narrator Aris did an excellent job with the story, I mostly enjoyed the bickering of the girls, she made it very fun and realistic at the same time, each character had its own accent and tone. Her voice gave the action parts more realism and made them far more interesting than reading. Needless to say I will be looking forward to listen to the second book, and I think I will be finishing this series.

overall it was good!

I think this was a pretty good book, although I thought she spent a little too much time in the beginning describing how many rooms were in the house and what they looked like. That would have been fine if there were a situation that called for a description, like a scene in those rooms , but it was not relevant to the story. Otherwise I was happy with the story, and loved the fact that the narrator gave the characters different voices!

Yes, the story was fun and I loved the bantering within the different generations.

What did you like best about this story?

Aunt Tillie. She is the Matriarch and don't you forget it. She was a lot of fun and added a bit of color to the book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Aris’s performances?

Not intentionally. I had thought that Valley Girls went out in the eighties, apparently I was wrong. She also went too fast and when I tried to slow the reading it didn't sound proper. At one point you could tell she was blocking her nose to get an effect. It wasn't very well done.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really. it was a fun story

Decent enough to wile away a few hours listening. Good characters but could be developed more.

Fun book to read

I found this book very enjoyable and intertaining. I will be reading more of the series.

I love Aunt Tilly!!!!

This was a really cute book. It reminded me of a real family. My family with magic. A good book book for a lazy day.

Couldn’t finish the Audible.

The story seems like it will be interesting, but I did not enjoy the Audible actress for this book. I paid for the Audible version as well as the kindle, because I like to listen in the car and at work. However, the actress read too fast and did not change her voice for the characters. This made it very hard to follow along without being confused on who was suppose to be speaking. Will try to read the kindle version when I have time.

Fun but a bit childish

The premise is fun but the constant bickering get a little old. The entire family is like a bunch of teenages most of the time.

Paranormal Cozy

I expected this to be a light read; a meeting of paranormal and a cozy mystery. It met my expectations. There was the light banter and the snarky, quirky family circle. A quite pleasant read.

The narrator, however, was a draw-back. I kept having to check if this was YA book. The Midwest characters all had a vaguely Valley girl way of speaking that came and went. Also, the narrator spoke so fast that I considered running the iPod at 3/4 speed. It was not so distracting so as to cause me to give up altogether, but did detract from my enjoyment somewhat.

super cozy mystery, with witches.

this was a good light read with all the fittings of a cozy mystery. The characters were fun, the plot was light and of course it had a good ending.
