As I approach my 65th birthday, I've recently discovered something that's been hiding in plain sight my entire life, my anxious attachment style. The books I've read on this topic all point to the same patterns, and frankly, I see myself in them like looking in a mirror that's been waiting decades to be uncovered.

My early childhood experiences laid the foundation:
• At age 6, overhearing heated arguments between my parents outside my bedroom door.
• My mother, who I now believe displayed narcissistic traits, and my father, who struggled with alcoholism.
• The vivid memory at age 8 of my dad packing his clothes in a paper bag, holding me on his lap, and explaining his departure wasn't because of lack of love.
• My parents' divorce becoming final two years later after their 11-year marriage ended, and he remarried a few weeks later.
• My mom moving us over 1000 miles away from my dad and his new family.
• Jealousy over my step-sister and brothers as they got to be with my dad, and I didn’t.

These early experiences shaped my beliefs about myself. The big one is I’m not worthy. I felt that my mother favored my brother over me; I received regular criticism that chipped away at my developing sense of self; and wondering if living with my dad and step-family might have provided more stability.

The effects continue to play out in my adult life as I have significant intimacy challenges even now. I had a profound fear of abandonment, especially in early marriage. My husband constantly had to tell me “I’m not leaving you”. Before anti-depressants, I had RAGE-level anger that caused me to tear apart my house twice in front of my children. I’m stabilized emotionally since the medication as it leaves me feeling little. Finally, I have rock-bottom self-esteem (about 1%) and virtually no self-confidence.

It appears, as the book advises, that more therapy is needed for my complete healing. But recognizing the pattern is the first step: awareness truly is the beginning of the healing journey.

This is a fantastic book. Get it!

This book was a great listen. I appreciated the use of real stories to illustrate how you can change things. I found it to be an encouraging book that helped to confront traumas so present-day choices make more sense. Sort of like truly understanding the background behind how you get to where you are and wind up making the choices you make in relationships. Several light bulb moments.

Those who are trying to recover from anxious attachment or who are in relationships with someone who is experiencing it may find this book very beneficial. The author's advice to educate yourself and become more conscious of your own attachment style was really welcomed, and I particularly found the chapter on healing your inner child to be informative.

The book also provides a variety of tools, from technology resources like apps and online platforms to useful strategies like journaling, all of which I think would be helpful for anybody trying to build safer relationship.
