Acerca de esta escucha

This updated edition of National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Louise Erdrich’s 1998 novel now features fascinating new content, a new title, and a new foreword by the author—a riveting story that explores tensions between Native American and white cultures.

“Audacious and surprising. . . . One of America’s most distinctive fictional voices.”—Boston Globe

When Klaus Shawano abducts Sweetheart Calico, the seductive Indian woman who has stolen his heart, and takes her far from her native Montana plains to his own Minneapolis home, he cannot begin to imagine the eventual ramifications his brazen act will entail. Shawano’s mysterious Antelope Woman has utterly mesmerized him—and soon proves to be a bewitching agent of chaos whose effect on others is disturbing and irresistible, as she alters the shape of things around her and the shape of things to come.

The Roy and Shawano families have been inextricably intertwined for generations and, unbeknownst to them, the mysterious Antelope Woman is a part of their fierce and haunting history. Antelope Woman ingeniously illuminates how that history affects the contemporary descendants of these families who are the products of two cultures, Ojibwe and white, which sit in uneasy relationship to one another.

In this remarkable novel, Erdrich weaves an unforgettable tapestry of ancestry, fate, harrowing tragedy, and redemption that is at once modern and eternal.

So good, so full of mystery and grief and redemption. Louise is a gift to literature.

Always iconic

Erdrich is one of my favorite authors, and I read many native American novels and histories, but this one was not one I enjoyed. The mix of myth and real world is confusing to me.

mystical

The stories that Louise Erdrich tells are always always immersive. I’ve now listened to her voice telling me two and these interwoven stories — I just love these dearly. I especially appreciate her stories that extend back and move forward like this one. I also (big smile) appreciated the reminder at the end to download the pdf! It was there at the beginning too but I needed to rush into the telling so glad there was that additional reminder. Yes!

Direct from the storyteller

I like all her authentic references. She shares all the traditions of her ancestors. She makes one long for traditions of one’s own. I have memories of my mother smoking, reading and burning our food. I learned to incorporate charcoal into my diet.

Nobody Like Her

Read by author this history of one family is heartbreaking yet soothing to listen to.

A calm view of native life

The story line might be easier to follow in print, as there seemed to be a lot of back & forth in time. While Ms Erdrich voice is soothing it is also monotone. I’m sure the book would be excellent.

An interwoven story

I lived this book. There was a lot of history interwoven with drama. I got

I really didn’t know what to expect going in. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a little confusing at first but I caught on fairly quickly (even without the visual aid of a family tree - you can look it up on the publisher’s website if need be). Great story! Thanks so much!
