What a beautiful book!

This is one classic I had not read but now I think I will read and re-read again. Anne (with an E) was an orphan and taken to Matthew and Morilla who really wanted a boy. Quiet, shy Matthew enjoys this little talkative girl but it took Morilla a bit longer.

There is so much (good stuff) going on in the book. Anne is gifted with an incredible imagination and sees wonder wherever she is. But that also comes with dismal ideas about what might happen.

One of my favorites from Anne is when she is reprimanded for doing something wrong. She replied that she never repeats a mistakes and since she is making so many she will soon run out and surely never make mistakes again. Love it.

Laurel Schroeder is incredible. I can't imagine anyone else as Anne. What a joy to read. So glad I was provided this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

A charming revisit to my childhood

Anne of Green Gables, written by L. M. Montgomery, has been an adored classic for many years. I remember this story from my childhood, and the nostalgia conjured up is priceless.

This is the first time hearing this story in audiobook form. I think it helps having the narration read aloud to me, due mainly to the long sentences and detailed descriptions authors used in the past. (The first sentence consists of almost 150 words!) Knowing that this was written in the late 1800s makes the wordiness much more acceptable.

The story centers on an eleven year old orphan, Anne Shirley. Her adoptive parents were surprised when the boy they expected to adopt as a helper on the farm turns out to be a girl. And what a handful! Though she has a positive nature and is quite mature for her age, her imagination manages to stir things up.

I love stories that take me back to simpler times. Not to say everything is simple and easy for Anne, but there is something dear about revisiting the past.


Audio Narration: Laurel Schroeder has an even, tender quality that is enjoyable to listen to. Her inflection is appropriate, and she doesn’t over-do it during dialogue. She switches character voices smoothly, without being distracting or disruptive.

Audio Production Quality: The production quality of this audio book is clear, with no distracting background music, static, or skips.

Overall opinion: Anne of Green is a charming, fun story that brings me back to childhood days. The writing is wordy, appropriate for the 1800s time period in which it was written, but is upbeat and filled with warmth and meaning.


**First Line: Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies’ eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde’s Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde’s door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

Outstanding Update to Beloved Classic!

The audiobook of the Anne of Green Gables narrated by Laurel Schroeder is an outstanding update to the children’s classic. Written by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908, it tells the tale of Anne Shirley who is orphaned after her parents are killed (by a virus that is probably curable with antibiotics today). Having visited the Canadian setting where the book is set a few years ago, Montgomery accurately captured the splendor and awe of the island and I could easily close my eyes and recall the beauty of the area while listening.

The story begins at Green Gables, a farm outside Avonlea, Prince Edward Island with an elderly couple (brother and sister) desiring to adopt a 10-11 year boy to help out around the farm. What they get instead is a redheaded, spunky, chatterbox who makes up words that sound more sophisticated. The rest of the story is basically the various adventures and scrapes that Anne gets into over the next 6-7 years. What makes Anne's character so enduring is that she is far from perfect. She makes mistakes, like we do. But Anne's ability to shrug off her mistakes and value learning from each one is truly admirable and inspirational.

Laurel Schroeder did an absolutely outstanding job narrating this book. She provided distinct and consistent voices for all characters, young and old. She has a spunk and sassiness in her readings that make listening very enjoyable. In summary, an excellent book that is superbly narrated! Brava!

Classic story with Awesome Narration!

Years ago I had read this book and liked the story. I found that I really enjoyed this audiobook even more. This is such a classic story and I found the narrator added so much to it. The book is appropriate for all ages as it is a clean listen. The timeless appeal of this reminiscent listen is comforting. I found the narrator to be quite fitting for this book, and I thought she was able to fit the various ages of Anne in this book. Laurel Schroeder is a truly gifted performer! She adds so much emotion to the characters and is able give the listener such visuals to the story. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of the story and narration. I highly recommend this book. I was provided with this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily written this review.

Darling Anne

Four generations of our family read Anne of Green Gables growing up and enjoyed it (as well as the rest of the series). Although published in 1908, according to my teen daughters, Anne's preteen/teenage experiences still resonate with teens today. For me LM Montgomery's writing falls into the category of comfort reads. Her books are beautifully written with gorgeous descriptions and wonderful characters, and while Anne is not even close to my favourite LMM, it is still a lovely read, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Narration: Laurel Schroeder has a clear, pleasant voice and she did a nice job of narrating the story using different character voices. Where the audio really shone was in her voicing of Anne. Laurel managed an impressive tone where she was able to portray Anne's youthful enthusiasm, but in a slightly subdued fashion. I loved how this brought home Anne's many years as an orphan where her exuberance would have been quashed.

Side note: Please please could someone do an audible for LM Montgomery's The Blue Castle. Valancy still remains one of my favourite fictional female characters.

For those who like to know... there is absolutely no sex, profanity or violence, and can be read by (or read to) all ages:)

One of My Favorite Stories from My Youth

One of my favorite stories from my youth and narrated by one of my favorite female narrating performers. Laurel Schroeder doesn't disappoint and does a great job performing one of my favorite stories and characters. I hope she performs more books in the series so I can own them all. I highly recommend this audiobook version of a classic written my Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Even better than I remembered it!

This performance reminded me why I loved these books as a young teen. At the end, when the sad things happened, I actually found myself tearing up! I discovered I already have a copy of this book, by a different narrator, but I won't be listening to that anytime soon because the voices as done by Laurel Schroeder were perfect. I hope she does more of the series because I'd love to have the entire set, especially if they're all done by this narrator.

I never heard this story before.I really enjoyed having Laurel Schroeder narrating it for me.Anne is an orphane that Merrilie and Matthew adopt,even though they wanted a boy.Anne has a huge imagination,which evidently was frowned upon at the time.“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”

A great classic and an even greater narrator...

I think the story of this entertaining classic is well known. I read it as a book many years ago and liked it a lot.

I had been looking for a good audiobook version of the Novell for a while - and here I found it. The way Laurel Schroeder narrates the story is - to me - just amazing. I cannot even say exactly why, but she keeps you listening with great pleasure from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

Not a fave listen, but a well done, popular title

I must admit that this is one of the few, shall I say classics, that I had never read. I put in along side Little Women, Black Beauty, and a few others presupposing they would not interest me. As it turns out, this title struck me as an interesting (albeit not too in-depth) listen dealing with the transformed lives of a child and those touched by her presence. The narration was well done, fit the work seamlessly, and made for a very easy listen.

I am fairly certain I probably would not have had the wisdom to appreciate the underlying story had I listened to it as a young reader, but that did not inhibit my experience as an adult.
