This collection features over one hundred short poems inspired by traditional Japanese poetry forms, including haiku, tanka, and chōka. Sixteen poems appeared in previous collections; the rest are new and written for this edition.

Joe's regular poetry is free verse, based on stream of consciousness, and explores love, metaphysics, and social justice. In contrast, his haiku and tanka are structured, aiming to capture fleeting moments rich in beauty and meaning. Each poem invites meditation on life's transience, the beauty of nature, compassion, essence, and mindfulness.

The most appealing aspect of this style of poetry is that it forges art into a discipline. It gently caresses and soothes the souls of the reader and author, grounding them in the immediate wonder of the present moment. This type of poetry bridges us to people from distant cultures and eras, quietly awakening a sense of connection and belonging. For example, it carries a palpable Zen spirit, echoing the essence of Shintoism, Buddhism, and Taoism. It also resonates deeply with the principles held dear by Stoic philosophers, such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, as well as modern spiritual teachers.

To guide your reading, the poems in this collection are grouped into four sections: Nature, The Art of Writing, Essence, and Love. We invite you to pause for a moment with each poem. We hope you enjoy this collection.
