In the late 1960s Dick Cavett took the talk show and elevated it with his personal brand of wit and intellect. With his unwillingness to appeal to the lowest common denominator, Cavett introduced audiences to controversial and progressive ideas along with legendary musicians and comics. It’s a real treat then, to hear Cavett converse with journalist Eddy Friedfeld and look back all the highs and lows that have made Cavett’s career so memorable. Entertaining anecdotes are mixed with replays of rare and unforgettable clips, ensuring there is more than enough here to garner repeat listens.

Dick Cavett offers an evening of memories and rare clips at New York's 92nd Street Y.

When Dick Cavett became a talk show host in 1969, his keen intellect and unique wit infused the format with a new style. Cavett offered a forum for controversial opinions and issues ranging from women's liberation to Vietnam. The Dick Cavett Show also became a late-night home for top rock bands and such comedy legends as Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, George Burns, Bob Hope, Sid Caesar, and Lucille Ball.

Eddy Friedfeld is a film and entertainment journalist and the co-author, with Sid Caesar, of Caesar's Hours: My Life in Comedy With Love and Laughter. Friedfeld is currently working on a book on the history of comedy in America.

Dick Cavett

What can I say, who does not like Dick Cavett. He goes through his early years, his show biz years and his walks and talks with William Styron, Art Buchwald about their depress. Very entertaining.

Disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was mercifully short and a pretty good way to spend a few hours while snowed in.

Would you be willing to try another book from Dick Cavett? Why or why not?

Yes! He is an extremely intelligent, witty person who has lived an interesting life.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

This performance would have made a better video than an audio recording. Seeing the body language and facial expressions would have enhanced the experience.

Do you think An Evening with Dick Cavett at the 92nd Street Y needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not intended as a book so this question does not apply directly. I do intend to read his memoirs, though.
