As they ride towards Miller's Crossing where he hopes to find work, down on his luck cowboy Marty Crawford and his aging mount Old Bullet are near starving. Marty has eaten nothing but bread and jerky for the last several days and Old Bullet has eaten nothing but grass.Unbeknownst to Marty, a bank robbery is taking place as he nears Miller's Crossing. In a twisted turn of fate, he encounters the bank robbers as they are fleeing the scene of their crime. One shoots him as they gallop by in the opposite direction. The posse finds Marty wounded and only partially conscious and mistakes him for one of the robbers. Not long after Marty is placed in a cell, a lynch mob begins to form.
