Friendship is a fundamental value in the lives of individuals. There are acquaintances and there are friends, and of these, very few are true friends—that is, someone to whom one can entrust one's life, family, and most intimate secrets without fear of betrayal. This is why the highly revered Benito Juárez is credited with the phrase: “To friends, justice and grace; to enemies, the law alone.” Thus, for a society that suffers from impunity and the systematic abuse of power, gaining influence is an existential necessity, and being considered a friend is fundamental.
Politics is fickle; what is a lie today may be true tomorrow, and today's enemy may be tomorrow's friend. Nothing lasts forever, but one of the things that is painfully lost is power, and to regain it, one resorts first to family members and then to friends, and that is the essence of amicuscracy.
