And Why We Are Not Ready

Along the Pacific Northwest coast, from Northern California through Oregon, Washington, and into British Columbia, millions of people go about their daily lives largely unaware that they are living atop one of the most dangerous geological features on Earth.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone represents a sleeping giant, a threat so immense that when it awakens, it will reshape the landscape, economy, and lives of everyone in its path.

This is not a question of if, but when. The geological record speaks with clarity that few wish to acknowledge. Every three hundred to six hundred years, on average, the Cascadia Subduction Zone releases its accumulated stress in a catastrophic megathrust earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami. The last such event occurred on January 26, 1700.

We are now well passed the statistical danger zone.

What makes this threat particularly insidious is its invisibility in the public consciousness. While Californians have long prepared for the Big One on the San Andreas Fault, most residents of the Pacific Northwest remain blissfully ignorant of the far greater danger lurking beneath their feet.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone can produce earthquakes thirty times more powerful than anything the San Andreas can generate, yet it receives a fraction of the attention, funding, and preparation.

This book exists to sound the alarm. Drawing on decades of geological research, historical records, and scientific modeling, it presents the case that the Pacific Northwest faces an existential threat that demands immediate and sustained action. The evidence is overwhelming. Science is settled.
The only question that remains is whether we will heed the warnings written in stone, soil, and ancient records before it is too late.
