There is a lot happening in this story. It is an intriguing mystery, while also spinning the tale of a love story. Brody and London are both alpha shifters, wolves. Alphas are not allowed to be mated to each other. That is a problem, as these two alphas are (or were) the leaders for neighboring packs who have been at odds with each other for years. They can’t combine the packs. What should they do? Brody’s father is stuck in his wolf form. I enjoyed the story. The narration was well done. Nice

I love to check out new-to-me authors, so when I came across this one, I did not pay attention to the fact that it was book 4 in a series. While I personally think the author did a good job of keeping that from being an issue, I strongly recommend that you start at the beginning. I will be backtracking myself, as this was a great story!
All that being said, I do not think that the audio version did it justice. Honestly, I'm hoping any other audiobooks in the series have a different narrator.

Alpha

This is the first book I listened to in this series and I don't think I missed anything but will try to grab the first 3 books. This is London and Brody's story and is very compelling, full of action, sweet romance, family issues and evil bad guys. The narrator's voice is very flat especially at the beginning it did get a bit better towards the end, somewhat differentiates the different characters but didn't like it at all, I hope Ms. Kinney finds someone better to vice her stories they deserve it.

Good, action-packed story

Really enjoyed this. There was a lot going on and really good action scenes. Narrator did a great job, too!

Loved it!

Alpha was so good. Brody and London's story was exciting. I enjoyed every minute of this book. I loved all the characters. I loved Major a food obsessed dog. Ben is back. I don't know how I feel about him yet. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Shifters romance

Alpha by Kay Kinney is an awesome shifter romance. Amber Goode did an amazing job with the narration. This story has it all magic, shifters, and vampires. The story is interesting, entertaining, mysterious, heartfelt, and fun. There’s romance, finding the truth behind everything, heartfelt, love and more. Will the main character find the truth before they are killed? Will they find out who is trying to stop and trying to kill the werewolf council? It a little confusing because in this story shifter and werewolves seem to be the same thing but in other stories they are different.

🩸 The Story

This one centers on Brody and London two alphas with history, chemistry, and a whole lot of pack baggage. One of the most compelling threads? Brody’s father being stuck in wolf form. It’s not just a magical hiccup it’s a symbol of everything that’s broken and unresolved in their world. The tension around why their packs can’t merge, and the deeper implications of two alphas trying to coexist, adds real weight to the story.

I genuinely enjoyed those layers. The emotional stakes are strong, and the political dynamics between packs give the romance a richer backdrop. But I’ll be honest I could see the arc coming from a mile away. It’s well-written, no doubt, but it doesn’t stretch far beyond what we’ve already seen in earlier books. If you’ve been following the series, you’ll feel the familiarity.

🎙️ Narration Notes

Amber Goode gives a clean, steady performance. Her voice suits the tone and she handles the emotional shifts well. Still, with two strong leads and so much internal tension, I kept wishing for dual narration or even a full cast. It would’ve added clarity and helped the romantic and political dynamics land harder.


🌕 Final Thoughts

While Alpha can technically stand alone, I wouldn’t recommend jumping in here. You’d miss the emotional threads that have been quietly building across the series. The tendrils from Bound are woven into this book, and knowing where Brody and London came from makes their story hit harder. You can start here but you’d be doing yourself a disservice.

Three and a half stars. Familiar, heartfelt, and worth the listen especially if you’ve been with the pack from the beginning. The story will keep you engaged all the way through, even if it doesn’t surprise you.

Great story!

I really enjoyed reading Alpha. I am really enjoying the series so far, and can't wait to see how it goes. I like how the story is progressing and can't wait for River's book! I really like the banter between Brodie and London. I love how they work together, and I find London really cool! I like that each book follows a different couple; I find them enjoyable. I will say, while they follow other couples, you'd want to read them in order because the plot of the story continues over into the next books.

An alpha who’s dog controls him

This is Brody and London’s courtship sage with the funny twists, the donut eating dog and prankster activities. A chuckle in every chapter but they’re still fighting to save their race. Danger, intrigue and adventures follow them as they seek answers. Very entertaining listening!.
