"E poiché la durata media della vita è molto maggiore per i ricordi di sensazioni poetiche che non per quelli delle sofferenze del cuore, dopo tanto tempo che sono svanite le pene che provavo allora a causa di Gilberte, è sopravvissuto ad esse il piacere che provo nel rivedermi conversare così con Mme Swann, sotto il suo parasole, come sotto il riflesso di un pergolato di glicini."
La prima parte del secondo volume della Recherche, All'ombra delle fanciulle in fiore è incentrata su Odette Swann, moglie di Swann e madre di Gilberte, la fanciulla di cui si è innamorato il narratore. In questo volume, l'autore racconta delle conoscenze da lui fatte tra Combray e Parigi, di cui le più importanti sono sicuramente quella con il marchese Norpois, con il suo 'idolo' letterario, lo scrittore Bergotte, e la sua attrice preferita, la Berma. Marcel incontra Berma la prima volta che va a teatro, quando ella interpreta la parte della protagonista del dramma teatrale Fedra (Phèdre) di Racine. Segue la descrizione da parte dell'autore del rapporto importante tra lui e Gilberte, una ragazza con la quale aveva vissuto una sorta di infatuazione nel periodo dell'adolescenza. In seguito Marcel si presenta alla famiglia Swann e, dopo questo avvenimento, approfondisce con una lunga descrizione il suo rapporto con M. Charles Swann e la moglie di quest'ultimo, Odette de Crécy. Charles Swann prende in simpatia Marcel, trattandolo in modo amichevole, proprio come fa sua moglie. Odette chiede a Marcel di farle visita più spesso, anche se egli, a un certo punto, non vuole avere più rapporti con Gilberte, con la quale ha litigato. Infatti il protagonista è ancora innamorato di lei, ma non è corrisposto, e proprio per questo il loro rapporto andrà esaurendosi sempre di più, fino a terminare del tutto quando Marcel deciderà di andarsene a Balbec.
La voce di Alberto Rossatti incarna con grande sapienza e partecipazione i sentimenti e le senzazioni di Marcel rievocate in questo incredibile affresco letterario considerato uno dei vertici della letteratura mondiale.
