It has been called 'The Greatest War Novel of All Time.'
All Quiet on the Western Front stands also as one of the greatest condemnations of war of all time. Follow a firsthand account of German enlisted man, Paul Baumer as he recounts details mundane and profound. His account moves and tears at our hearts with the horrors of war and the stark realities of humanity. All while somehow skirting around the question: Why?
I bite into my pillow. I grasp the iron rods of my bed with my fists. I ought never to have come here. Out there I ws indifferent and often hopeless--I will never be able to be so again. I was a soldier, and now I am nothing but an agony for myself, for my mother, for everything that is so comfortless and without end.
I ought never to have come on leave.
This edition also features commentary by narrator and classic literature enthusiast Benjamin Fife

This book comes alive with the performance by Benjamin Fife, who does an incredible job capturing the emotion, empathy, hatred and terror of the narrator. I was genuinely moved to tears at different parts of this book based on the words and the performance.
My only criticism is the accent that Mr. Fife, who is American, chose to narrate the book with. I think reading the English translation with a German accent is an admirable idea. The issue is, to my ear, it sounds more like a generic Eastern European accent than a German one. It was a bit distracting at first, but the excellent performance won me over.
Emotionally Resonant Reading of Devastatingly Honest Book

When I was prepping for narrating this book, I of course looked to see what other performances of it were available. I was incredibly surprised that, even though the book is told entirely from the perspective of a German soldier in WWI, NONE of the prior performances (Spoken in English at any rate) were read in any kind of German Accent.
I don't know that my accents are perfect, but I found that having his voice in my head as a starting point made it a lot easier to connect with the content emotionally.
If you listen to this book, I hope my performance connects with you. I certainly felt it as I narrated it.
Thank you Erich Maria Remarque for your brilliant account you left us. The world has largely forgotten the 'Great War,' but the message of this book lives on.
Best Anti-War book - Read with a German Accent!
