Even at the top of a hundred-foot pole, there’s nowhere else to go but forward.

Dharma talks help to ground our practice, providing inspiration and an essential recognition of exactly where we find ourselves, so that we can learn to face difficulties and obstacles with a free and flexible mind. This talk was given at Zen Mountain Monastery or the Zen Center of New York City of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1980 by the late American Zen Master John Daido Loori, Roshi (1931-2009).

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Zen Dharma Talk
This particular talk for the Student of Zen, is truly on the mark. A Dharma talk isn’t a Dharma “read”
John is perhaps one of the only true Zen teachers America has produced. I knew the simultaneous translator for a Roshi and we discussed how weak American Zen was at the time ( 1979) and he explained that it had not even been in America 100 years yet. It took hundreds of years to settle down in China and Japan. John shows the true Dharma eye.
