Resumen del Editor

Three best-selling hard boiled crime novels by Gavin Reese

This collection includes:

Room Number Three

A sadistic child killer awaits in Room Number Three. One year ago, Detective Alex Landon began investigating the unexplained disappearance of 10-year-old Kevin Stevenson. Now he could finally sit across from the predator he believed responsible. The catch? Landon has no evidence to hold his suspect, who clearly knows investigators can't stop him from leaving whenever he chooses to do so.
While Landon struggles to keep the suspect cooperative and contained, his team of detectives work to identify the evidence necessary to arrest him. Investigators soon uncover incredible, graphic horrors and willful suffering that alters everyone involved - including Detective Landon, who is forever haunted by the monster he encountered in Room Number Three.

The Debt Collectors

A frantic 911 call from a farmer sends firefighters and patrol officers to a hay field to investigate a late model Mustang coupe fully engulfed in flames. Believing it nothing more than an expensive property crime, a stolen and destroyed joyride, the fire crews go about extinguishing the routine blaze. As the flames recede, however, the discovery of two burned corpses inside the coupe's trunk shifts the investigation and priorities for everyone involved. Detective Alex Landon leads the double-homicide investigation, which soon identifies the executed victims as interstate drug traffickers he'd arrested only two weeks prior. While Landon and his team work to learn the motive and find those responsible for the murders, he can't shake a haunting suspicion that forces inside the Dry Creek Police Department are working against him.

The Misery Merchant

A teenage girl has gone missing, and Detective Alex Landon fears they're already too late to rescue her from unimaginable terror. With the help and encouragement of her teachers and mentors, 16-year-old Princess Peralta has almost succeeded in redefining herself from "aspiring drop-out" to "college-bound honors student". When she's reported absent from Dry Creek High School without explanation, School Resource Officer Javier Ramirez knows something's wrong. After he learns no one's seen Princess for 48 hours, he immediately teams up with Detective Alex Landon to investigate. What they soon uncover leads them on a desperate interstate search to rescue Princess, who they're convinced has been kidnapped by one of the most dangerous human predators, a violent convicted sex trafficker.

Time is running out to save the girl's innocence, and maybe her very life. Landon and his team are forced to balance what they know, what they can prove in a court of law, and the dire consequences for everyone involved if they fail to reunite Princess with her family. The experience of this investigation will haunt Alex Landon forever, and immediately alters the focus and trajectory of his law enforcement career.

So hard-boiled you could make egg salad!

These stories give "police procedural" a new. tighter meaning. The approach is somewhat different, in that we know whodunit from the first, and then we find ourselves eavesdropping on some realistic cops as they close in on a suspect with a crime in progress. It's just as exciting.

The prose is stripped down to business, and while our hero, Alex Landon, is in every story, each plot isn't all about him and his heroic exploits so much as where investigations lead him, and the cops and characters he meets along the way. And how everyone feels about the suspects, each other, and the work.

I thoroughly enjoyed these three short novels! Stephen Floyd's narration grew on me quickly, and the quirky sound style (real, high-volume phone bleeps and rings, for instance, that made me jump just as they do in real life) is appropriate to the impromptu, live feel of the performance. It got a bit staticky in some places, but I was so engrossed, I didn't really mind.

I'm pleased to be introduced to Gavin Reese, and I'm off right now to find more audiobooks of his.
